10 injured in clash over UP polls in Chitalmari

A union parishad chairman candidate and ten others were injured on Friday in a clash between supporters of the two candidates of chairman post in Chitalmari upazila in Bagerhat.

Kalatala UP independent chairman candidate Alamgir Hossain (55) and 10 people from both sides were injured. The police brought the situation under control.

Witnesses said the incident took place around 4 pm. As soon as the news of the clash spread out, panic created around the area.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Bagerhat Mir Shafin Ahmed visited the spot after hearing the news.

Witnesses said clash started between the two sides after an altercation over a trifling matter.

Among the injured Alamgir Hossain (55), Zahurul Islam (32), Mir Shahjahan (60) and Nabil Mir (28), Rommel Mir (24), Aminul Islam (40) have been admitted to Chitalmari Upazila Health Complex.

On the other hand, supporters of Alamgir’s rival Awami League nominee Badsha Mia Sheikh said that Rafiq Fakir (35), Hurmuz (33), Khokon Sheikh (32) and Liton Sheikh (30) were injured. They have been given first aid. Chairman candidate of the boat symbol Md. Badshah Mia Sheikh denied the incident of attacking on the independent candidate Alamgir Hossain.

In this regard, the independent chairman candidate of Kalatala Union No. 2 Abu Jafar Md. Alamgir Hossain said, “Chairman candidate Md. Badsha Sheikh and his terrorist forces have attacked us in a planned manner. The CCTV footage of the upazila administration has captured the footage. I want justice for this heinous attack.”

Chitalmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Shariful Haque said,” Police took immediate control of the situation. If anyone wants to create anarchy, it will be strictly suppressed.”
