Community leaders can play a vital role to prevent human trafficking: Experts

World Concern Bangladesh ensures protection and justice through integrated approach (EPJIA) Project organized a daylong workshop to active and strengthen Union Counter Trafficking Committee (UCTC) of Kalikaproshad Union Parishod at Bhairab Upazila in Kishoreganj district with government stakeholders on Monday.

Kalikaproshad Union Parishod Chairman Md. Liton Miah presided over the workshop attended by Assistant Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Musa Miah, Union Parishad Member Most. Shimul Akhter, Most. Farjana Akter, Khurshida Begum,Md: Kowsar, Abdullah AL-Santu, Mujibur Rahman,Local leader Abu Hanif Khan World Concern Bangladesh’s Program Officer James Sunny Boiragee, Bhairab Micro Credit Program’s Branch Manager Nazim Sarker among others.

The workshop was attended by the Union Counter Trafficking Committee (UCTC) members, religious leaders, professionals, Union Parishad Secretary, Govt. & local govt. representatives, NGO workers & civil society representatives.

Kalikaproshad Union Parishod Chairman Md. Liton Miah said “World Concern Bangladesh has been playing a vital role in preventing child marriage, gender discrimination, human trafficking in this region.”

They are trying to ensure child rights & protection. They also working with government & local government to prevent Human trafficking from community level. Most of the people goes to abroad through illegal way & fall in danger & lost their life. Trafficker use various tactics for conveyance people for trafficking. Now a days, they use social media to trap people for trafficking.

Assistant Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Musa Miah, said “that to stop Human trafficking we must need a media. Local govt, is a proper media to get information about trafficking. We also need strong networking with GO& NGO’s. Awareness raising is must to prevent trafficking. He gives some suggestions to arrange quarterly meeting with Union Counter Trafficking Committee (UCTC) & discus about trafficking matters of their community. If we will fail to solve our local trafficking problem, we can use Hot line 999 to solve it easily.

Program Officer James Sunny Boiragee said “that there are to factors of being trafficked. Puss & pull factor. There are many reasons of trafficking. Poverty, family problems, unemployment, lack of education & awareness, abuse, polygamy, dowry & the effects of divorce are the main reasons of trafficking. To prevent trafficking Union Counter Trafficking Committee (UCTC) must be active & strengthen. Local leaders, civil society, religious leaders should take a vital role to stop Human trafficking. However, as we are evolving, it is time to work together to stop trafficking.” “These social ideas and practices must stop to prevent trafficking,” he added.
