Workshop on preventing gender discrimination, human and sex trafficking held in Bhairab

World Concern Bangladesh organized a daylong workshop on preventing gender discrimination, human and sex trafficking at Shibpur Union Afsar Uddin High School at Bhairab Upazila in Kishoreganj district with government stakeholders on Wednesday.

Shibpur Union Parishad Chairman Md Shafiqul Islam presided over the workshop attended by Afsar Uddin High School’s Headmaster Md Jashim Uddin, Union Parishad Member Most. Shimul Akhter, World Concern Bangladesh’s Program Officer James Sunny Boiragee, Bhairab Micro Credit Program’s Branch Manager Nazim Sarker among others.

The workshop was attended by religious leaders, journalists, teachers, professionals, Union Parishad Secregary, NGO workers, civil society representatives, Imams and others.

Shibpur UP Chairman Md SHafiqul Islam said “World Concern Bangladesh has been playing a vital role in preventing gender discrimination, human and sex trafficking in this region.”

“There is not alternative to eradicating gender discrimination for holistic development,” he said adding that “Women’s participation must be ensured beside men for keeping a balance in society and development.”

Attending the workshop, World Concern’s Micro Credit Program Branch Manager Nazim Sarker, said “World Concern Bangladesh is working in a diverse way to bring socio-economic development in this area.” The organization is helping students of vulnerable families and creating social awareness, he added.

Afsar Uddin High School’s Headmaster Md Jashim Uddin said “There is no alternative to eliminating gender discrimination. There must be equal rights of men and women to bring justice in society.”

Shibpur UP Member Most. Shimul Akhter said “I was once a victim of gender discrimination. I’m here for World Concern’s activities. I’m self-reliant now and working for my community people and contributing to my own society.”

Program Officer James Sunny Boiragee said “Gender discrimination is different in different context, religion, society. Here in Bangladesh, we blame mothers if she gives birth to girl child. We provide less food to girl children in family. We classify works between men and women. We marry off girl children without taking their opinion.” “These social ideas and practices must stop to prevent gender discrimination,” he added.
