The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of Bangladesh Water Development Board, in a bulletin, today said that North-Eastern and adjoining upstream region in the country may experience short-term flood due to heavy rainfall in the 48 hours since this morning.

Some rivers of this region including Surma, Old Surma, Sarigowain, Khowai,
Jadukata, Someswari, Bhogai-Kangsha may rise rapidly and cause short-term
flood in the adjoining low-lying areas as there is a chance of heavy to very
heavy rainfall in the region during the period, the bulletin added.

Low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts have already been inundated
due to incessant rains and onrush of upstream water. According to the Water
Development Board, the highest 335 mm rainfall was recorded in Sunamganj
district during the last 24 hours.

Weather Office sources said rainfall across the country has been increased as
monsoon is active. Sylhet could face such a rainfall for a week, it added.

Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj district Didar Alam Maksud Chowdhury said necessary steps have been taken. He urged the people of the flood-hit areas, whose houses have been inundated, to take shelter in the educational institutions.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the mighty Padma rivers are in steady state while the Ganges River is in rising trend which may continue in the next 48 hours.

All the major rivers in the North-Eastern region of the country are in rising
trend.

Due to the chance of heavy rainfall in the adjoining upstream, the Teesta,
the Dharala and the Dudhkumar rivers in the region may rise rapidly at times
in the next 48 hours.

Besides, the Teesta River may cross danger level at Dalia point in Nilphamari
district in the next 24 hours, said the FFWC.
