Import duty on onion withdrawn

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has withdrawn import duty on onion till December 31 this year in order to keep its price at a tolerable level.

The NBR issued a gazette notification to this end on Thursday with immediate effect. Earlier, the importers had to pay 5 percent import duty.

Meanwhile, the revenue board also reduced the regulatory duty on import of non-refined sugar to 20 percent from 30 percent till February 28, 2022. A separate notification has been issued in this regard.

Earlier, Bangladesh Tariff Commission had requested the government to reduce import duty on these two popular kitchen items.

Later, the Ministry of Commerce requested the NBR to reduce duty on onion, sugar and edible oil.

Earlier on Monday, the Ministry of Commerce also held an inter-ministerial meeting to keep the price of essentials stable.

Earlier on September last year, the NBR withdrew import duty on onion which continued till March 31 this year.

Later, the 5 percent import duty on onion was restored from April.
