Fire kills 2, injures 22 in old city

At least two people died and 22 others were injured in a fire at a chemical warehouse in the ground floor of a six-storey building at Armanitola in the Old Dhaka early Friday, police and fire service sources said.

“The fire broke out at a chemical warehouse at about 3:15am . . . and the firefighting units brought the blaze under control around 6:00am. The fire however left two persons dead and 22 others injured,” said a spokesman of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.

Meanwhile, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangshal Police Station Shahin Fakir from the spot told the national news agency that the inmates of the building, “Musa Mansion”, got trapped in their apartments of the building as there was a chemical warehouse at its ground floor.

The fire service with the help of all concerned managed to rescue the trapped people by cutting grills of their apartments, the OC added.

Police identified the deceased as a security guard and another one a female resident of the building.

The injured were whisked off to the Sheikh Hasina Plastic Surgery and Burn Institute unit at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and also the Mitford Hospital here.
