Amid a vigilant scrutinization before giving the position to the committee of the student front of ruling Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Sabikun Nahar Lata ‘cunningly’ secured a position at the BCL’s Dhaka South City Corporation Committee.
Sabikun Nahar Lata married to Sajib Molla, son of Moinuddin Molla. Moinuddin is the younger brother of executed war criminal Mirpur’s Butcher Quader Molla. Moiunddin is also the chairman of Bhashanchar union in Faridpur 4 constituency.
According to Sabikun Nahar Lata’s social media profile, she holds six positions including BCL DSCC’s Deputy Woman Student’s Affairs Secretary and also an aspirant of Woman Vice Chairman position at Sadarpur Upazila in Faridpur district.
Lata introduces herself as- news presenter of Bongo TV; general secretary and former Joint General Secretary of Bangabandhu Ain Parishad of Central Law College; Woman Affairs Secretary of Nixon Chowdhury Jubo Songram Parishad.
The final identity she uses for herself is ‘an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League.’

According to sources, Lata married to Swapan Bhuiyan, son of Khalil Bhuiyan in Baliakandi village under Sirajdikhan upazila in Munshiganj. The sources also informed that, Swapan Bhuiyan is a field level activist of BNP in Munshiganj district.
Later in June 2020, she married to Quader Molla’s nephew Sajib Molla of Amirabad village in Sadarpur upazila in Faridpur district.
The question arises now, didn’t the BCL central leaders evaluate the history or background of Lata? Or do BCL top leadership knows the ‘hidden’ identity of Lata? Or don’t they keep their leaders under observation?
Lata completed her B.A. and M.A. in English from Stamford University Bangladesh. Lata completed her SSC from Kuchiamora Adarsho High School in Munshiganj’s Sirajdikhan upazila.
BCL’s Move to Purge Intruders
Earlier on 3rd October in 2019, the then acting General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharya said “We have started the verification process to purge the intruders with the help of BCL grass-root leaders, journalists, and intelligence members.”
According to the instruction from the AL Chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the student front of ruling Awami League, BCL started identifying the ‘intruders.’
The BCL would take immediate organizational actions and legal steps, if requires, against the intruders, Bhattacharya added. But the question arises again, how did Lata escape the verification process?
Prime Minister’s Statement Against Infiltrators
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 30th August 2020, instructed the party leaders not to allow “infiltrators” into Bangladesh Awami League (AL). “The party’s image will be tarnished due to their misdeeds,” she said.
“When any (party) remains in power, some people show up (to join the party) from different sides. After making their way in, they resort to misdeeds, and then the party has to bear the brunt,” Prime Minister said while attending a discussion marking National Mourning Day in 2020.
Pointing the so-called intruders, Sheikh Hasina said “if they join in, they harm the party and resort to killing our committed leaders and activists. The incidents are seen as ‘infighting’. But when observed closely, it’s apparent that these incidents are carried out by those who had suddenly joined the party,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said the infiltrators behave so amicably that many party leaders take them in to strengthen their groups. “Bringing them in is detrimental for us,” she cautioned.
What do Other Leaders think of ‘Hybrid’ politicians in party?
On the 72nd founding anniversary of the oldest political party on 23rd June 2021, Awami League’s Organizing Secretary BM Mozammel Haque said “The party has been in power since 2009, many people joined it for personal gains and put it in trouble.”
“This is such a huge problem for us,” he said adding that the party chief has ordered that “hybrid” politicians and outsiders be thrown out of the Awami League.
According to media report, Bangladesh Awami League begun the operation to purge ‘hybrids’ from the party in 2019.
Late veteran AL leader and the party’s presidium member Mohammad Nasim said in 2019: “Now, everyone one is AL and we need to be cautious of these people.”
AL’s the then general secretary, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, on 15th May 2019 said: “These people are being identified; we are pinpointing controversial leaders who entered AL from anti-liberation parties.” The party will be made stronger and a purging operation will be carried out, he added.
Reportedly, many leaders from other parties began to join AL after the party came to power in 2009. It’s believed that in 2016 and 2017, a plethora of BNP-Jamaat leaders and workers from the field level joined AL.
Party Chief and PM Sheikh Hasina has always warned the party workers of such opportunists. In 2017, letters from the central office gave specific instructions to prevent relatives of any Jamaat or BNP leader from joining AL.
Agriculture minister, Dr Abdur Razzak, has “Opportunists cannot join AL and hide their crimes.”
Who is Abdul Quader Molla?
Sabikun Nahar Lata’s father-in-law’s elder brother Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla was hanged on December 12 in 2013 for his crimes against humanity in 1971, in the first execution of a war criminal in Bangladesh.
The smiling photograph of the ‘butcher of Mirpur’ flashing a victory sign, following a life sentence by the war crimes tribunal on Feb 5, had sparked off a huge public campaign for his death.
