The Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Sunday (21 November) arrested a fugitive accused some 20 years after a bomb attack on Baniarchar Catholic Church in Muksudpur Upazila of Gopalganj district in 2001.

The arrested is Obaidur Rahman bin Abdullah, 41. (According to age calculation, the arrestee was a 20-year old boy during the notorious attack in 2001 that took 10 lives of Christian people in Bangladesh.)

A team of CID’s Counter Terrorism Unit raided a house in the New Town Residential area of Dhaka’s Demra around 7:00am on Sunday and arrested Obaidur, CID’s Special Superintendent Muhammad Nazmul Alam said in a press conference.

The official said that Obaidur was accused of carrying out a bomb attack on Baniarchar Catholic Church in Gopalganj’s Muksedpur area. A court issued an arrest warrant against Obaidur after police charged him with the offence.

On June 3, 2001, a bomb exploded at Baniarchar Catholic Church during a prayer session, killing 10 members of the Christian community.
