Challenging world leaders for a water just action agenda

A Bangladeshi delegation consisting of Civil Society Organization (CSO) representatives, General Economic Division (GED) representatives from Ministry of Planning, alongside officials of Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives (LGRD) Ministry and Water Resources Ministry have been invited to attend UN 2023 Water Conference in New York starting from 22 March 2023.

Mohammad Zobair Hasan, Deputy Executive Director of Development Organization of the Rural Poor (DORP), as part of the delegation, is set to join an impactful session at the conference as a speaker on Water Action and Human Rights – Implementing the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation at the Local Level. The 90-minute session will take place on 24 March 2023 at German House, 871 United Nations Plaza.

It will showcase voices from local government institutions and local communities in order to show how the human rights to water and sanitation are already being used, to draw lessons for the practical application of rights at the local level and identify ways national governments and the international community can support the practical realization of the human rights to water and sanitation.

A panel of experts, including from the national government and support agencies, will discuss with the audience what actions can and should be taken in support of the realization of the human rights to water and sanitation at the local level.

It should be noted that the human rights to water and sanitation are at the core of Sustainable Development Goal 6 and are universally recognized by all UN Member States. Standards and principles pertaining to these rights are clearly defined.

The Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Tajikistan and the Netherlands, will feature an opening and closing ceremony, six plenary meetings and five multi-stakeholder interactive dialogues.

It will also feature several high-level special events and side events organized by Member States, the UN system and other stakeholders.

The outcome of the Conference will be a summary of the Conference proceedings and new commitments, pledges and actions by Governments and all stakeholders towards achieving SDG 6 and other water-related goals and targets, compiled in the Water Action Agenda.
