1 killed, 10 injured in clash between two candidates

A man was killed and ten others were critically injured in a clash between supporters of two member candidates in the upcoming UP elections to be held on January 31 in Sarishabari of Jamalpur.

The incident took place at around 11 am on Saturday (January 29) at Char Nalsandhya village of Pingna Union under the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Bhola Sheikh, 70, son of late Harunur Rashid of Kajal village under Nishchitpur union of Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj district.

UP member candidate Nurul Islam alleged that the people of rival candidate Sujat Ali Suru attacked them. Bhola Sheikh was killed and 10 more other supporters were injured who were admitted in several local hospitals.

Laili Begum, wife of the deceased, said that in the morning, Nurul Islam went out to seek votes. At that time, the opponents grabbed Rubel and Halim and took them away. When she went to rescue them, her husband was hacked to death with a sharp knife.

Abdul Latif, in-charge of Tarakandi Investigation Centre, confirmed the matter and said the body was recovered and preparing to send the body to the morgue for postmortem.

Later, 10 people were arrested in connection with the incident, said Mir Rokibul Haque, OC of Sarishabari Police Station.
