Centenarian Braj Rani gets pucca house as Prime Minister’s gift

A report titled ‘Inhuman life of the centenary old Braj Rani’ was published in various print and electronic media on August 8 in Chitalmari, Bagerhat.

When this humanitarian report went viral on social media, the issue also came to the notice of the altruistic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Immediately, the Prime Minister’s Office asked Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Azizur Rahman to extend all possible cooperation, including the construction of the old woman’s house.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Azizur Rahman touched the house of old Braj Rani at Boalia village of Hijla union in Chitalmari Upazila of Bagerhat at 10:30 am on Friday. At this time, he soon took the initiative to build a pucca house as a gift of the Prime Minister for Braj Ranj, including Tk 10,000 in cash and food items.

“I heartily bless Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina when I heard about getting a house from the Prime Minister,” tearful Braj Rani said. Among others, Chitalmari Upazila Parishad Chairman Ashok Kumar Baral, Upazila Nirbahi Officer(UNO) Md Liton Ali, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Jannatul Afroz Swarna, Women Vice Chairman Sabera Begum Swapna, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Apurba Das, Hijla UP Chairman Kazi Ajmir Ali , Union Awami League President Gazi Abzal Hossain and other media workers and locals were present at that time. Locals said that after the death of Braj Rani’s husband, she started living in a shack in her father’s house in Boalia village of the upazila.

Although the house is uninhabitable, she has been living there for 15 years with great difficulty. Braj Rani, who has lost her resources, picks vegetables from the garden and sells them in the market. The report published in various media on August 8 went on viral. In this context, Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner(DC) Mohammad Azizur Rahman, under the direction of Prime Minister Office, took the initiative to build the old woman’s house and made arrangements to provide all kinds of facilities.

Earlier on August 17, Chitalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer(UNO) Md. Liton Ali provided Tk 6,000 in cash, two bundles of corrugated iron and food aid to Braj Rani on behalf of the upazila administration. Md. Ekramul Haque Munshi, a local media worker, said that they were the first to spread the news about the old Braj Rani in various print and electronic media. They thanked the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for gifting Braj Rani pucca house at the end of her life as the news came to the notice of the Prime Minister on social media.

In this regard, Deputy Commissioner(DC) Mohammad Azizur Rahman said, a report about old Braj Rani has gone viral through social media. The matter came to the notice of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who actually instructed us to build a house for Braj Rani. Necessary steps have been taken to build a house for Braj Rani as per this directive. At the same time, she was given Tk. 10,000 in cash and essential food items, he said.
