Huge amount of polythene-laden truck seized in Sherpur, driver held

Police seized a huge amount of banned polythene-laden truck in Bhatshala area of Sadar upazila on Dhaka-Sherpur highway and arrested the driver on Saturday afternoon.

The arrested truck driver was identified as Babul Mia, son of Mirza Abdullah, village of Sheikh Hati area of the Sadar upazila.

According to the information of the truck driver Babul Mia, the owner of the truck is Md Abu Raihan Khowarpar area of Sherpur town.

The seized truck with about 10 metric tons of banned polythene was coming from Dhaka to Sherpur. The estimated value of the seized polythene is Tk 30 lakh, sources said.

It is learned that on the basis of secret information, the officials of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) first seized the truck carrying banned polythene in the Bhatshala area. After informing the Department of Environment and the police, they came to the spot and successfully completed the operation.

NSI, environment department and police sources said that regular cases are being processed in this regard. According to police and NSI, truck driver Babul Mia is being questioned to find out where and for what purpose the huge quantity of banned polythene was being brought to Sherpur. According to the information provided by the driver, the next necessary legal action will be taken, the NSI, the environment department and the police department, added.
