Early marriage bid foiled in Nakla; parents fined Tk 50,000

A 15-year-old girl of class 10 was saved from early marriage with the intervention of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zahidur Rahman in Nakla upazila of Sherpur district on Sunday night at around 11pm.

UNO Zahidur Rahman fined the fathers of the bride and bridegroom Tk 25,000 each under the Early Marriage Prevention Acts.

On secret information, a mobile court led by UNO stopped the early marriage bid red-handed and fined the parents Tk 50,000 at Chatrakona village in Nakla Union.

Mobile court sources said on the news that Abdul Hai’s underage daughter, village of Chhatrakona under Nakla union, is being arranged for marriage with Saher Ali’s son a mobile businessman Khalilur Rahman, village of Laykha under Urfa union of the upazila.

UNO went to Abdul Hai’s house and stopped the marriage.

However, before the court’s Executive Magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zahidur Rahman reached the wedding spot, bride and groom feeding and some other marriage formalities were over.

In this situation, under the Early Marriage Prevention Acts the father of the bride and groom is fined a total of Tk 50,000 and Bond was taken from them that the families are not marrying off the children until they reach adulthood.

UNO Zahidur Rahman said that during the operation of the court, SIs, ASIs and police members of Nakla Police Station and other dignitaries of the local area were present.
