Over fifty burghers fall ill after breakfast

At lest 55 people, including women and children, have fallen ill after eating substandard food at a hotel in Jamalpur’s Sarishabari on Monday night.

The incident took place in Panchpir area of ​​the municipality. They were admitted to the Upazila Health Complex. The incident has spread panic among the people of the area, locals said.

According to local and hospital sources, people from Panchpir Bazar area of ​​Sarishabari Municipality went to Lalu Mia’s shop for breakfast in the morning.

After noon, they have symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, they are admitted to the Upazila Health Complex one by one in critical condition. Most of them are children and women.

The patients being treated at the hospital are: Sumi, Abdul Aziz, Fatema Begum, Lal Vanu, Hosne Ara, Younus Mia, Monir Uddin, Shahjahan, Swadhin Mia, Zakir Hossain, Ratul, Marjaya, Tamim, Mishti, Riya Moni, Sabbir Hossain, Zubair, Alam. Mia, Bidyut, Abdul Haque, Majnu Mia, Siam, Azizul, Siraj Uddin, Lal Mia, Jaminur, Rakib Mia, Fahad, Farid Mia, Tara Mia, Ashraf Farooqi, Ahad Faruki, Sofiq Miah, Jubaida Khatun.

Besides, the critically ill were shifted to Jamalpur Sadar Hospital.

Sumi Begum, the mother of Shishu Mishti and Tania, who came from Panchpir area for treatment, said, “My two children go to Lalu’s food hotel with their grandfather for breakfast in the morning.” After eating breakfast, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea started.

Later, when their condition became serious, they were admitted to the hospital, she added.

Hotel owner Lalu Mia was also admitted to Sarishabari Health Complex and he said, “I have been running here this hotel business for many years, but such an incident has never happened.

Ariful Islam, on duty’s doctor at the Health Complex, said that patients with abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea have been coming to the hospital since yesterday’s noon. Most of them are being admitted and given treatment and few of them are shifted to Jamalpur Sadar Hospital.
