Cyclone Yaas: Tidal wave washes away 2091 fish farms in Bagerhat

Tidal wave due to cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ washed away over 2,091 fish enclosures in the coastal areas of Bagerhat district.

This has caused a huge financial loss of several crores of taka to the fish farmers. These fish enclosures are washed away by the tidal wave. The worst affected districts are Rampal, Mongla, Morelganj and Sharankhola. In Bagerhat district, there are 67,000 fish enclosures.

This year, the target is to produce 33,000 metric tons of fish from this area. However, there are doubts as to whether the target will be achieved due to the fish floating in the tidal waters.

According to official data, 917 fish enclosures were washed away in Rampal, 85 in Mongla, 125 in Morelganj and 144 in Sharankhola upazila.

Bagerhat Fisheries Department said 2,091 fish farms have been inundated in Rampal, Mongla, Morelganj and Sharankhola upazilas of Bagerhat due to cyclone Yaas. It is initially thought that the farmers have lost one crore Tk 53 lakh.
