Mentally challenged woman killed in Nakla road crash

A mentally challenged woman was killed in a road accident at Nakla upazila of Sherpur district on Tuesday night.

The victim was taken to hospital soon after the accident took place at around 7 pm to 8 pm in the Paiska bypass area of the Dhaka-Sherpur highway.

The deceased was identified as Hasuni Begum (26), daughter of Sharif Hossain, village of Hatpagla Dakshin Para in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh district.

Jahangir Hossain of Paiska Bypass area said that he saw a woman lying on the side of Dhaka-Sherpur highway in Paiska Bypass area on his way home on a bicycle.

Later, Jahangir Hossain, locals Emdadul Haque and Manik Mia took Hashuni unconscious in a van to Nakla Hospital. Doctors admitted the patient to the hospital as there was no guardian. Hasuni Begum died at Nakla Hospital at 9:55 pm.

Jahangir Hossain also said that no serious injuries were found on Hashuni’s body but there were signs of minor injuries on his head. He thinks that she collided with a motorcycle or small vehicle and fell on the paved road. As a result, she fell unconscious on the roadside.

Matiur Rahman, son of the deceased’s sister (nephew) said that his aunt Hashuni Begum, who is mentally challenged, used to go to different areas alone without the knowledge of her family members as she was a mentally challenged woman for a long time.

She left home around noon on Tuesday. Later, at around 10 pm, they came to know through people that Hashuni had died in a road accident while undergoing treatment at Nakla Hospital. Hashuni’s mother (Matiur’s grandmother) Mamata Begum and Matiur Rahman rushed to the Nakla hospital.

Dr Nazmus Shakib on duty at the Nakla hospital confirmed the death. Dr Nazmus Shakib said Hashuni Begum vomited after being admitted to the hospital. As his condition continued to deteriorate, she died before could be sent for advanced treatment. As of the writing of this report, the body is in Nakla Hospital.
