Opinion on Begum Zia’s medical treatment abroad soon: Anisul

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque on Thursday said that a letter asking for permission for BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s departure abroad for better treatment has been received, opinion on the matter will be given as soon as possible.

“We will send our views in this regard to the Home Ministry as soon as possible,” Anisul told the newsmen on Thursday afternoon.

He said, “Begum Zia’s sentence has been stayed under Section 401 of the Criminal Procedure Code. It remains to be seen whether there is an opportunity to consider matters related to the application abroad. Then our opinion will be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.”

Earlier on Wednesday night, BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s younger brother Shamim Eskander took the written application asking for permission to take her abroad for better treatment to home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal’s house in Dhanmondi.

Upon receipt of the written application, it was sent overnight to the Secretary, Law and Justice, Ministry of Law, for comment.

Begum Zia is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital. She recently tested positive for Covid-19, hospital sources say.
