At least 25 people were killed as a speedboat hit a sand-laden bulkhead on the Padma River in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila on Monday morning.
One of the deceased was identified as Taher Ali (35), a resident of Rajor upazila in Madaripur. The identities of other deceased are yet to be known.
The accident occurred at Banglabazar Ferry Ghat area around 7:00am, said Ashiqur Rahman, inspector of Banglabazar Ferry Ghat Traffic Police.
In total 25 bodies were recovered from the river so far, our Faridpur correspondent reports quoting the inspector.
Five people were rescued alive. They were taken to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex.
