The government is ready to enforce a weeklong strict lockdown from April 14 to April 20 intending to contain the alarming rise in coronavirus (Covid-19) infection rate.

“A seven-day strict lockdown will be enforced in the country from April 14,” State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain told media on Friday.

All government and non-government offices, garments and other factories will remain shut during the lockdown, except the emergency services.

Hossain said all kinds of transport services will also remain stopped during the period. A notification will be issued on Sunday (April 11) to this end, he added.

At a function on Thursday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government is going to take tougher measures to save the people’s life considering the rising trend of coronavirus infection rate, he mentioned.

The state minister said the people will not be allowed to go out of home by any means during the lockdown.

Replying to a question about the movement of traders with the demand of keeping markets and shopping malls open, Hossain said markets will remain open till April 13 and it is essential to enforce strict lockdown from the next day.

Without strict lockdown, the transmission of coronavirus and deaths from it cannot be contained, he added.
