Two fined for selling turtles in Bagerhat

A mobile court on Thursday fined two tortoise sellers for violating Wildlife Conservation & Protection Act-2012 in Chitalmari upazila in Bagerhat.

They are—Subash Halder, 60 and Hira, 50 from the area.

Chitalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Md. Maruful Alam said, a mobile court raided the Chitalmari fish market and Subhash and Hira along with 39 live turtles and turtle cutting equipment.

Both of them were fined Tk 10,000 under the Wildlife Conservation Act-2012, said the UNO adding that the turtles were released into the Madhumati river.

According to the Wildlife Conservation Act, catching and selling tortoises as endangered animals is a punishable offense. The offenders have been punished under sections 6 (c) and 34 (b) of the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act-2012, UNO added.

UNO also said that legal action will be taken against those involved in such acts.
