COVID-19: First day of 2021 sees 470,000 new cases globally

The very first of the new year 2021, Friday saw 470,000 new COVID-19 cases globally in only 24 hours rising the total number of confirmed cases to 81.94 million.

The World Health Organization (WHO) data also shows that the number of fatalities rose by more than 9,900 to exceed 1.8 million globally.

The WHO statistics only take into account the officially confirmed cases of infection and deaths provided by countries.

According to the dashboard of WHO, more than 1.8 million have died from coronavirus infection in 222 countries of the world.
