Speakers for reducing the cost of kidney dialysis in Bangladesh

Dailynewsun News Desk:

Considering the high treatment cost of Kidney related diseases, speakers at a discussion meeting on Friday urged the government and private sector authorities to reduce the cost of dialysis for the poor segment of people.

They observed that the treatment facilities for kidney diseases, number of Nephrologists and dialysis centers are very limited in comparison to the growing number of kidney patients in the country, said a press release.

Kidney Awareness Monitoring and Prevention Society (KAMPS) organized the discussion meeting as part of the formal inauguration of ‘KAMPS-Kidney & Dialysis Center Shakhipur’, at Shakhipur Upazila.

KAMPS opened it’s 4th dialysis unit at Shakhipur with an aim to expand the dialysis facilities for the poor patients at an affordable cost.

KAMPS, a non-profit, voluntary organization of the country, mainly aims at spreading the kidney care facilities upto the doorstep of the general people and those who are deprived of opportunity.

With this aim in view KAMPS has already been running dialysis service and kidney treatment facilities at different District cities of the country including capital city Dhaka, Tangail and Chandpur.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of the Shakhipur Upazila, Chitra Shikari formally inaugurated the ‘KAMPS Dialysis Center-Sakhipur’ at the center premises, Panichattra area of Sakhipur city.

Chief Consultant of the Department of Nephrology, Anwar Khan Modern Hospital, Dhaka, also Chairman of KAMPS, Professor Dr. M A Samad presided over the inaugural ceremony while he also made a power point presentation on the kidney diseases, its reasons, symptoms and remedial measures.

While addressing Chitra Shikari said that Professor MA Samad has got a humanitarian attitude to the people of Shakhipur and Tangail and people here will be benefitted through the opening a dialysis unit at Shakhipur.

Upazila Chairman of Shakhipur , Zulfiquer Haider Lebu, General Secretary of Shakhipur Upazila Awami League, Shawkat Shikder, Member of KAMPS, Md. Amin Sharif Shupon, Founding Vice President of KAMPS, Nasrin Begum, Executive Director, Rezwan Salehin also addressed the meeting among others.

Addressing the event, KAMPS Executive Director assured that the people at Shakhipur and Tangail area will be provided all out services from the newly established center with lowest possible cost.

In the keynote speech, Prof. Dr. M A Samad said in Bangladesh more than 2 crore of people are affected by kidney disease, the treatment cost of this is very high and even 10 percent of patients do not have the ability to afford the cost so most poor patients loss their lives without treatment whereas its possible to prevent upto 60 of this killer disease by raising awareness among people.

“In the private sector dialysis center the dialysis cost is very high, it’s from Tk 3500 to 5000 and is not affordable for the middle and lower income segment of people, so KAMPS has created opportunity for people to get dialysis at a reasonable cost at its centers”, he added.

Speakers opined that not by treating patients rather people may stay free from this disease by prevention and awareness is the only way for this.
